A story of compassion and the land that shaped them both.

This is the story of two boys, their fathers, and a tragic accident.

Set in the remote San Luis Valley of southern Colorado, The Heart and the Eagle is a story of friendship, tragedy, and forgiveness. In the fall of 1963, a hunting accident changed the lives of two families forever. But what followed was compassion.

This is a story filled with humor and tragedy and maybe a couple of lessons. Besides, it includes tales of cowboys, sheepherders, mining towns, strippers, horses, and a mule.

Summary

Inspiration Behind the Story

The title comes from a formation on the Sangre de Cristo Mountains visible from the living room window of the author’s childhood home. Formed by patches of brush and snow near timberline, the image shows a heart pierced by the outstretched wing of an eagle.

This book reflects on strength, sorrow, youth and loss, guilt and grace. It’s a personal account of events that occurred over sixty years ago, and is a testament to their experiences.
